Welcome to Possum Busters

The pesky possum has probably wreaked more damage on our native plants, bird and wildlife, than any other creature in New Zealand's history. According to expert calculations, their are approx, 80 million of them chomping through over 8 million tonnes of vegetation per year.

And it's not only tree's and plants that are threatened, but these furry creatures also eat giant land snails and birds eggs, including those of the kiwi, kokako and kereru. They also compete with the kaka for food.

Over the years to counter the devastating effects of possums, DOC (The Department of Conservation) have resorted to using the poison 1080, fueling a raging debate whether its use is destructive to other species and to the environment itself.

DOC on the other hand strongly defends the use of 1080, claiming it is bio-degradable, so does not accumulate in the environment and is a necessary evil.

Although this argument does not appease the hunters and many conservationists who are outraged at the indiscriminate killing of pigs, deer, birds insects and even huntings dogs and horses.

New Zealand Possum Busters oppose the use of 1080, not only from a viewpoint that the poison could find its way into our creeks, streams, rivers and harbours, but from an economic and moral level.

Why not put our 80 million possums to a positive use? Why not support the fur industry? Why not use the meat for pet food? Why not support those who are establishing an overseas meat market? Why not support the fit and able who want to get off the dole? Why not create more jobs? Why not stop poisoning our environment.

Lets put the possum to a positive use. If you have a poison-free farm, orchard, bush or forestry block overrun with these critturs and your seeking an alternative to poisoning, give Possum Busters a call.
